Justice Department Probes NFL Over Fan Subscription Fees

The Justice Department has opened an antitrust investigation into whether the NFL’s TV and streaming deals are forcing fans to pay too much in subscription fees. The probe focuses on consumer affordability and whether the league’s media-rights structure gives an unfair advantage to certain providers.

What’s being investigated

Officials are looking at how the NFL distributes games across broadcast TV, cable, and multiple streaming services, which can require fans to subscribe to several platforms to watch every game. The concern is that the setup may be anti-competitive and may price some fans out of watching the full schedule.

Why it matters

The NFL has long benefited from antitrust exemptions tied to broadcast television, but those protections don’t clearly cover all streaming and cable arrangements. Lawmakers have also raised concerns that the total cost of following the league can approach about $1,000 a season when cable and streaming are combined.

NFL response

The league has defended its distribution model as fan-friendly, even as the investigation ramps up. For now, the DOJ inquiry is still at the fact-finding stage and has not produced any enforcement action yet.
