Why So Many Americans Are Clinging To Their Jobs

In the post-pandemic period, job-hopping often came with meaningful raises, but that advantage has narrowed. At the same time, hiring has slowed, so workers have fewer attractive options and less leverage to make a switch.

This “job-hugging” trend may help companies keep turnover down, but it can also make workers feel stuck and less motivated to pursue better opportunities. Economists warn that if people stay in roles they don’t like for too long, it can also weigh on innovation and overall growth.
