Trump Snaps at Reporters During White House Press Conference: “Wait ... Be Careful ... Quiet!”

President Donald Trump clashed with reporters during a White House press event on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, repeatedly interrupting journalists and telling one correspondent to be careful during a tense exchange in the Oval Office.

The confrontation unfolded as Trump and Vice President JD Vance announced a new federal fraud whistleblower incentive program. As reporters attempted to ask questions, Trump raised his voice, telling one journalist, “Wait! Wait! Wait!” before directing her to be quiet.

The president later had a heated exchange with Andrew Feinberg, a White House correspondent for The Independent, who questioned the administration’s proposed rewards for people reporting fraud and later attempted to ask Trump about his golf course plans.

Trump Warns Reporter to “Be Careful”

During the exchange, Trump questioned Feinberg about his identity and news organization, despite the reporter having identified himself earlier in the interaction.

“I don’t know who the hell you are, but you better be careful,” Trump told him.

Feinberg attempted to continue asking questions, but Trump moved on to other reporters. The exchange drew attention after video footage circulated online, showing the president repeatedly cutting off the journalist.

The confrontation continued when Feinberg tried to ask about Trump’s golf courses and plans involving East Potomac Golf Course in Washington, D.C.

“Wait, wait. Quiet. Quiet!” Trump responded, before asking the reporter, “What’s wrong with you? Are you a sick person?”

Feinberg replied, “Not that I know of, sir.”

Trump then added, “I actually think there’s something wrong with you.”

Dispute Over the Administration’s Fraud Whistleblower Program

The tense exchange began amid questions about the administration’s newly announced Fraud Whistleblower Incentive Program, which is intended to reward people who provide information that leads to significant fraud enforcement actions.

Trump promoted a proposed 1% reward for qualifying tips. Feinberg questioned why potential whistleblowers would use the new program when the federal False Claims Act can provide larger awards in certain successful cases.

Vance pushed back against the reporter’s comparison, arguing that the existing law does not cover many of the types of fraud the administration hopes to investigate.

The disagreement escalated as Trump and Vance challenged the reporter’s questions. The exchange highlighted questions about how the new program would operate and how its proposed rewards would compare with existing whistleblower protections.

Reporter Responds After the Confrontation

Following the incident, Feinberg addressed the exchange publicly, saying he had already told Trump which outlet he represented. He also explained that he believed the president had pointed toward him when he attempted to ask a follow-up question.

Vance later criticized Feinberg on social media, calling him an “imbecile” in a post about the encounter. An official White House rapid-response account also targeted the journalist online.

The incident generated widespread discussion, with reactions reflecting differing views on the president’s treatment of reporters and the role of journalists in questioning government officials.

Another Clash in Trump’s Relationship With the Press

Trump has repeatedly engaged in contentious exchanges with journalists during his political career, frequently criticizing questions he considers unfair or hostile. Tuesday’s confrontation added another episode to his long-running and often combative relationship with the news media.

The incident also renewed discussion about press access, the treatment of White House correspondents, and the importance of journalists being able to question public officials about government programs and policy decisions.

The Oval Office exchange took place during an official announcement, with cameras recording the president’s remarks. The video has since drawn attention to both the substance of the whistleblower program and the increasingly personal tone of the exchange with reporters.
