Tomato prices rising fast

Tomato prices are rising fast because several pressures are hitting the market at once: tariffs on Mexican imports, higher diesel costs, and supply-chain strain. Fresh tomatoes are now averaging about $2.26 per pound, roughly 23% higher than a year ago, which is the highest level in eight years.

What’s driving it

Most fresh tomatoes in the U.S. come from Mexico, and tariffs on those imports are adding to costs. At the same time, tomatoes have to travel long distances by truck, so higher diesel prices are feeding into grocery prices.

What it means

The jump is showing up even while broader grocery inflation is more moderate, which makes tomatoes stand out at the checkout. Reports also suggest prices could stay elevated if fuel stays high and supply remains tight.
