See Earthset and Solar Eclipse Images Captured by Artemis Crew

NASA has released striking Artemis II images showing both an “Earthset” and a solar eclipse viewed from deep space during the crew’s lunar flyby. The photos captured Earth slipping below the Moon’s horizon and, later, the Moon completely blocking the Sun so the solar corona became visible.

What the crew saw

The Artemis II spacecraft passed within about 4,067 miles of the Moon, giving the four astronauts a rare view from the far side. NASA says the crew also saw lunar features in unusual detail, including craters and basin formations, as they traveled beyond the Moon.

Why it matters

The “Earthset” image is being compared to the famous Apollo 8 “Earthrise” photo because it offers another dramatic human perspective of our planet from lunar distance. The eclipse image is especially rare because the Moon’s position from the spacecraft made the totality last much longer than an eclipse seen from Earth.
