Heroic Goose Warns Family of Barn Fire, Saves Dozens of Animals

A pet goose named Goosey is being hailed as a hero after alerting a Texas family to a barn fire in the middle of the night, helping save dozens of animals.

The incredible moment was captured on the family's home security camera and shows Goosey honking loudly as flames spread through the barn.

Goosey Sounds the Alarm

The fire broke out at the Gerber family's property in Richmond, Texas, in the early morning hours of August 3.

Chelsea and Bert Gerber said Goosey began making unusually loud noises outside the barn. Bert was awakened by the honking and went outside to investigate.

That's when he realized the barn was on fire.

He quickly grabbed a garden hose and worked to get the flames under control.

Dozens of Animals Saved

The barn housed the family's hatchery animals, including around 100 chickens and turkeys.

Because Goosey alerted the family so quickly, Bert was able to respond before the fire became even more destructive. The family said all of the animals were safe.

The family believes faulty or old electrical wiring may have caused the fire.

A New Family Member Becomes a Hero

Goosey had only been part of the Gerber family for a few months.

The family's daughter met the goose at a poultry expo and immediately fell in love with him. The family eventually brought Goosey home, despite Chelsea admitting she had traditionally been afraid of geese.

Now, the family credits their feathered friend with helping protect their home and animals.

“I feel extremely grateful,” Chelsea said after seeing the security footage of Goosey's warning.

The Gerbers are now planning to get Goosey a companion, whom they intend to name Lucy.
