Fake Weddings for $40K? Six Charged in Alleged Massachusetts Marriage Fraud Ring

Federal prosecutors have charged six people in Massachusetts in connection with an alleged marriage fraud operation that reportedly charged immigrants as much as $40,000 for sham weddings designed to help them obtain U.S. immigration status.

Authorities announced the charges on October 21, accusing the group of operating a scheme for more than a decade. Investigators allege the operation arranged hundreds of fraudulent marriages and generated millions of dollars in profits.

Prosecutors identified Jennifer Gonzalez, 43, of Fall River, as the alleged organizer. The other defendants are Erica Daniels, 29; Chreise Alejandro, 39; Amara Pugh, 31; Jessica Tavares, 31, of Attleboro; and Jaylin Hill, 26, of Fall River.

Five of the defendants were arrested, while Hill was already serving a state prison sentence for an unrelated firearms offense.

How the Alleged Marriage Fraud Scheme Worked

According to court documents, Gonzalez allegedly operated a business that connected immigrants seeking legal status with U.S. citizens willing to enter fraudulent marriages in exchange for payment.

Prosecutors allege that customers typically paid between $38,000 and $40,000 per marriage. The operation reportedly arranged approximately 18 to 20 sham marriages annually, allowing customers to submit documents to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in support of immigration applications.

Investigators allege Gonzalez paid several of the other defendants to marry immigrants, while Pugh allegedly worked as the operation’s secretary.

The purported arrangements allegedly went beyond wedding ceremonies. According to prosecutors, Gonzalez instructed customers on how to make their marriages appear genuine, including establishing joint bank accounts, purchasing life insurance policies, and taking photographs together as couples.

Some participants allegedly received ongoing payments of approximately $500 per month to maintain the arrangements. Prosecutors also say photographs from weddings and social outings were used to support fraudulent immigration applications.

Investigators Allege Millions in Profits

Federal authorities allege the operation generated more than $6 million over its years of activity. Gonzalez allegedly told a cooperating witness that she used the proceeds to purchase businesses and real estate in the Dominican Republic.

During the investigation, authorities reportedly recorded Gonzalez accepting a $3,000 cash down payment and discussing a contract designed to conceal the arrangement’s alleged fraudulent purpose.

Prosecutors also allege that some defendants made false statements on applications for government food assistance. Gonzalez is accused of receiving more than $120,000 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits while concealing income and marital information.

These allegations form part of a broader investigation into the group’s activities and the financial benefits it allegedly received.

Six Defendants Face Federal Charges

The six defendants face charges including marriage fraud, conspiracy to commit marriage fraud, harboring immigrants unlawfully present in the United States, and conspiracy to harbor immigrants.

Under federal law, marriage fraud and conspiracy to commit marriage fraud each carry potential penalties of up to five years in prison and fines of up to $250,000. The harboring-related charges carry potential penalties of up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $250,000.

Any sentence would depend on the outcome of the proceedings and the applicable federal sentencing rules.

Federal officials said the investigation remains ongoing, and additional developments may follow as the case moves through court.

The charges are allegations, and all six defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
