Christa Pike in critical condition after botched execution

A Tennessee death row inmate is in critical condition after surviving a failed lethal injection that was supposed to end her life.

Christa Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed Wednesday at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Instead, Pike survived after receiving two doses of pentobarbital, the drug used in Tennessee's single-drug lethal injection protocol. Her attorneys say she is now receiving lifesaving medical care at a hospital.

The extraordinary failure has prompted Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee to halt the state's remaining executions for the rest of 2026 and order an independent review into what went wrong.

Pike Remained Conscious

According to witnesses and court filings, Pike remained conscious during much of the execution attempt.

After the first injection, she reportedly complained that her arm was hurting. A second dose was administered later, but witnesses could still hear Pike breathing and making snoring sounds nearly 30 minutes afterward.

Her attorneys eventually filed an emergency motion seeking to stop the execution and provide her with medical treatment. Pike was ultimately taken from the prison by ambulance to a Nashville-area hospital.

The Tennessee Department of Correction said officials followed the state's established execution protocol but has not explained why the lethal injection failed.

An Unprecedented Failure

The incident has been described by a death-penalty expert as unprecedented.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, other lethal-injection executions have failed because prison officials could not establish an intravenous line. Pike's case is different because the drugs were apparently administered, yet she remained alive and was later transported to a hospital.

Her attorneys said Pike experienced severe pain and blistering around the injection sites. They believe the drug may have entered tissue rather than her bloodstream, although the state has not publicly confirmed what caused the failure.

Governor Halts Executions

Gov. Lee called the failed execution “deeply disturbing” and ordered a comprehensive third-party review.

The governor also postponed another execution that had been scheduled for later this year. He said Tennesseans deserve answers about what happened and emphasized that executions must be carried out according to legal and constitutional requirements.

The Tennessee Department of Correction maintains that its staff followed the approved procedure.

Pike Was Convicted in a 1995 Murder

Pike was 18 when she participated in the killing of Slemmer, a 19-year-old classmate at a Knoxville Job Corps center.

Prosecutors said Pike, her boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp and another person lured Slemmer into a wooded area, where she was tortured and killed. Pike and Shipp were convicted of first-degree murder. Because Shipp was 17 at the time, he was not eligible for the death penalty.

Pike had maintained that she accepted responsibility for her role in Slemmer's death while her attorneys and supporters argued that her age, mental-health history and alleged history of abuse should have been considered in determining her sentence.

What Happens to Pike Now?

For the moment, Pike remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Her attorneys say they do not yet know her prognosis. They have renewed their request that Tennessee commute her death sentence to life in prison following the failed execution.

The state's independent review is expected to examine the execution procedure, including how the drugs were administered and why two doses failed to produce the intended result.

The case has also renewed scrutiny of Tennessee's use of a single-drug lethal injection protocol, which the state adopted in 2024.

For now, a case that was supposed to end with an execution has instead left Tennessee facing questions about how its capital-punishment system failed — and what happens next for Pike.
