Grey’s Anatomy Alum Isaiah Washington Reveals Secret Death of Wife Jenisa
The former Grey’s Anatomy star revealed that his wife of 29 years, Jenisa Marie Garland, died in June 2025 after suffering a massive hemorrhagic stroke. She was 59.
Washington shared the news in an emotional Instagram post on Oct. 3, explaining that Jenisa suddenly collapsed on May 31, 2025, and died nine days later.
“It came as a huge shock to me and our entire family,” Washington wrote, saying that his wife “succumbed to a massive hemorrhagic stroke and never recovered.”
A Loss the Family Kept Private
Washington said he chose not to publicly discuss Jenisa’s death because she was an extremely private person.
The couple had been married for nearly three decades after being introduced in 1995. They shared three children — Isaiah, Tyme and Iman — and Washington said Jenisa's legacy will continue through them.
“I don’t know if this is an appropriate post, because Jenisa Washington was extremely private,” he wrote, acknowledging that she might not have wanted their family tragedy discussed publicly.
Still, after more than a year of grieving privately, Washington decided to share the news.
His Warning About Headaches
Alongside the announcement, Washington issued a message to his followers about the importance of taking unusual or severe headaches seriously.
“Some headaches are not just headaches or migraines,” he wrote, warning that they can sometimes be a sign of something much more serious.
He encouraged people to seek medical attention and consider brain imaging when appropriate, particularly when experiencing concerning symptoms.
A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and causes bleeding. It is a medical emergency and can cause sudden, severe symptoms.
Remembering His Wife
Washington's announcement was met with an outpouring of condolences from friends and fellow actors, including Viola Davis, Debi Mazar and Michael Beach.
He also recently paid tribute to comedian and actor Reggie McFadden, who he credited with introducing him to Jenisa in 1995. McFadden died recently as well.
For Washington, the two losses have brought painful memories of the relationship that shaped much of his adult life.
He has previously spoken about how marriage and fatherhood changed him, saying that having a wife and children helped him become a better person.
A Career Best Known for Grey’s Anatomy
Washington is best known for playing cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Preston Burke on Grey’s Anatomy during the show's early seasons.
He left the series in 2007 following a controversy involving an on-set incident and the use of a homophobic slur. He later returned for a guest appearance in 2014.
Washington announced his retirement from acting in 2023, although he recently hinted that he could potentially return to the entertainment industry.
For now, however, his attention remains on his family and the legacy of the woman he spent nearly three decades beside.
“She Left 3 Incredibly Amazing Children”
More than a year after Jenisa's death, Washington is finally allowing the public to understand why he stepped away from the loss and kept it private.
His message was ultimately less about revealing a family secret and more about remembering his wife — while encouraging others not to dismiss serious health symptoms.
Jenisa may have lived much of her life outside the spotlight, but Washington says her memory will live on through their three children.
