A couple bought a mansion locals called cursed, then tragedy struck
What began as a dream retirement turned into a disturbing murder investigation for a couple who purchased a mansion overlooking Dale Hollow Lake, a property that had developed a reputation among locals as being cursed.
The case is the focus of a new report from CBS’s 48 Hours, with correspondent Peter Van Sant examining the events surrounding the mansion, the murder of Michael Harding, and the deaths that followed.
A Dream Home Takes a Dark Turn
Michael Harding, a businessman and military veteran, married Julie Harding, a California Highway Patrol commander, after the two met online. The couple later purchased a spectacular home in Tennessee, hoping to enjoy a new chapter of their lives together.
But their future took a tragic turn when Michael disappeared in 2022. Investigators eventually discovered that he had been murdered, setting off an investigation that uncovered a trail of evidence pointing toward a planned killing.
As detectives pieced together the case, attention turned to the people connected to Michael in the months before his disappearance.
Investigators Follow a Trail of Clues
The investigation revealed details that helped authorities reconstruct the events leading up to Michael’s death. Phone records, financial activity and other evidence became important parts of the case, helping investigators build a picture of the relationships and communications surrounding the murder.
Thomas O’Donnell was ultimately convicted of Michael Harding’s murder by a Kentucky jury in May 2026 and sentenced to life in prison.
The case took another tragic turn when Julie Harding was later found dead at the Tennessee mansion, deepening the mystery surrounding the property and the events connected to it.
Inside the Case Behind the Mansion’s Reputation
The home’s reputation as a cursed property has fueled local fascination, but the investigation centers on the people, evidence and decisions behind the deaths—not supernatural explanations.
In its report, 48 Hours revisits the case through interviews with family members, friends and investigators, exploring how authorities uncovered the circumstances surrounding Michael Harding’s murder and what happened afterward.
Van Sant’s report, titled “The Mansion Above Dale Hollow Lake,” examines how a property purchased as a dream retirement home became associated with a case marked by betrayal, murder and unanswered questions.
