81-year-old luggage delivery driver gets a shot at retirement
Johnson was delivering lost or delayed luggage to a home in the Dallas-Fort Worth area when the homeowner, Erin Howell, noticed him on her Ring camera.
The footage showed the elderly delivery driver slowly making his way up the stairs with the bags. Howell went outside to help — and soon learned why Johnson was still working at 81.
Working to Help His Wife
Johnson told Howell that his wife of 57 years, Josephine, is battling aggressive cancer.
The couple had moved in with their daughter to help reduce expenses, but medical bills, prescriptions and everyday costs continued to pile up.
Johnson said he had tried to find other work, including applying at Amazon and Walmart, but wasn't able to find a job. The luggage-delivery work became a way for him to keep bringing in money.
“I appreciate what we do get from insurance, but it doesn’t cover it all,” Johnson told NBC 5. “And cancer treatment is very expensive.”
14-Hour Days on the Road
Johnson began taking on additional hours, sometimes working 14-hour days and driving hundreds of miles during a single shift.
He said some deliveries even took him as far as Oklahoma.
Despite his age and the physical demands of the job, Johnson continued working because he felt he had no other choice.
“I love her dearly, and I want her to be well,” he said.
A Stranger Decides to Help
After hearing Johnson's story, Howell decided she couldn't simply let the encounter end at her front door.
She started a GoFundMe fundraiser called “Help Don Retire” and created a TikTok page to share his story.
What happened next stunned both Johnson and his wife.
Thousands of strangers began donating, with the fundraiser eventually bringing in hundreds of thousands of dollars. As of Sept. 24, reports said donations had surpassed $370,000, with the campaign approaching its $400,000 goal.
“It Restores My Faith in People”
Johnson said he never expected Howell's decision to help to grow into something so large.
He described her kindness as a miracle.
“It restores my faith in people,” Johnson said. “For her to do that was a miracle. We didn’t ask for it, but it helps so much.”
Josephine was equally moved by the response, saying she was grateful for the way the community rallied around her husband.
A Chance to Finally Slow Down
The timing of the fundraiser has been especially important for Johnson. He recently began experiencing problems with his car, forcing him to reduce his delivery hours.
After spending years working to help his wife through a difficult illness, the generosity of strangers may finally give him the opportunity to slow down.
For a man who kept showing up because he believed his wife needed him to, a simple luggage delivery became something much bigger — a reminder that sometimes strangers are willing to carry some of the weight, too.
