Woman killed by her alleged stalker

A California family is demanding answers after their daughter was fatally shot in a Sacramento-area parking lot by a man authorities say had allegedly stalked and harassed her for months.

Shalini Thakur, 38, was killed Sept. 8 outside a shopping center in Sacramento County. Authorities say the man accused of stalking her, 22-year-old Rohit Rohit, confronted and chased her before shooting her. He later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a standoff with law enforcement.

Her death has left her family questioning how the situation was allowed to escalate despite Thakur's efforts to protect herself.

The Alleged Stalking Escalated

According to authorities and court records, the alleged harassment began about a year before the shooting, after Thakur met Rohit through his work delivering food.

Investigators say the behavior became increasingly intrusive. Rohit allegedly tampered with Thakur's vehicle, secretly tracked her using an Apple AirTag and entered her home using a copied key while she was sleeping. He also allegedly pressured her to marry him.

Thakur eventually obtained a restraining order against him in May 2026. Authorities say Rohit later violated that order.

A Warning Before the Shooting

Court documents reportedly show that Thakur had previously raised concerns about Rohit's behavior, including allegations that he tracked her, interfered with her car and made threats involving a gun.

Despite those warnings and the restraining order, the harassment continued, according to investigators.

The circumstances have intensified questions from Thakur's family about whether more could have been done to protect her before the attack.

The Final Confrontation

On Sept. 8, surveillance footage reportedly captured Rohit approaching Thakur near her vehicle.

Authorities say she attempted to get away, but he chased her and opened fire. Thakur was fatally wounded in the parking lot. Reports say Rohit then fled the scene before being located by deputies along Highway 50.

A standoff followed, during which Rohit died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Remembering Shalini

Family and friends have remembered Thakur as a caring and generous woman whose life was cut short.

Her death has also drawn renewed attention to the dangers of stalking, particularly when repeated harassment escalates into threats and physical violence.

For Thakur's loved ones, the restraining order and the warnings she made before her death have made the tragedy even harder to understand.

Questions That Remain

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to reconstruct the months leading up to the shooting and determine what happened at every stage of the alleged stalking.

Thakur's family is now left mourning a daughter who, according to reporting, had repeatedly sought help as the situation became more dangerous.

Her death has left them asking a painful question: What more could have been done to keep her safe?
