Why Celine Dion Wanted to Return to the Stage Amid Stiff-Person Syndrome Battle

Published: August 18, 2026

Celine Dion is opening up about her difficult health journey and the powerful reasons she wants to return to the stage.

In a new interview for Harper's Bazaar's Global 2026 Icons issue, the 58-year-old singer reflects on living with stiff-person syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological disorder that dramatically affected her ability to perform and even carry out everyday activities.

The issue hits newsstands on August 25.

A Life-Altering Diagnosis

Dion describes the debilitating effects the condition had on her body, revealing that the pain could become so severe that she sometimes struggled to walk.

She also discussed relying on high doses of anti-anxiety medication to help her function during some of the most difficult periods of her illness.

The condition forced Dion to step away from the stage and postpone performances as she focused on managing her health.

Finding a New Appreciation for Performing

Despite the challenges, Dion says her experience has changed how she views her career and her relationship with her fans.

After years of performing at the highest level, the singer now says she has a deeper appreciation for what comes with being an entertainer—including the physical and emotional demands of performing and the connection she shares with audiences.

That perspective has helped fuel her desire to return to live performances.

Celine Dion Returns to the Stage

Dion is preparing to make another major return to performing with a Paris residency beginning September 12.

Her comeback represents a significant milestone following years of health challenges.

For Dion, returning to the stage isn't simply about resuming her career. It's an opportunity to reconnect with the audiences who have supported her throughout her journey and to perform on her own terms.

Her story is also a reminder of the determination it can take to return to something you love after a life-changing health challenge.
