A violent confrontation involving an adult man and a group of middle school students outside a Broward County fast-food restaurant is under investigation after cellphone video of the incident began circulating online.

The confrontation happened Aug. 21 outside the McDonald’s at 1310 S. Federal Highway in Dania Beach, near Olsen Middle School. The video appears to show several children surrounding and physically confronting an adult man, prompting concern from parents and community members.

A parent who witnessed the incident said she was picking up her children from school when she noticed the confrontation and began recording.

Witness Says Man Was “Basically Jumped”

Yanelle Perez, whose children attend nearby Olsen Middle School, said the scene was disturbing.

“They basically jumped an old man,” Perez told Local 10.

She said she did not know what happened inside the restaurant before the confrontation began, but described seeing a group of children attacking the man outside.

Perez also said her children told her that similar incidents may be part of a trend occurring after school.

“I just feel like parents need to be aware,” she said.

The video has since circulated on social media, raising questions about what led to the altercation and whether the children involved could face consequences.

School Gives a Different Account

Olsen Middle School Principal Janet Giancarli sent a message to parents acknowledging the incident and confirming that law enforcement responded.

However, the school's description differs significantly from the witness's account.

According to the principal, an adult male approached the students and initiated a physical confrontation outside the restaurant.

The school emphasized that the incident did not take place on school property or during the school day, but said administrators were taking the situation seriously and would continue cooperating with law enforcement.

“No one was injured,” the message stated.

Perez disputed the school's characterization, saying she did not believe the man initiated the confrontation based on what she witnessed.

“He was basically begging them to leave him alone,” she said.

Police Investigation Continues

The Broward Sheriff's Office responded to the incident and investigated what happened. Authorities have not publicly established a definitive account of how the confrontation began.

The conflicting descriptions have made the circulating video an important part of the investigation, but the footage alone may not show what happened before the recording began.

At this point, authorities have not announced criminal charges related to the confrontation.

The incident has also prompted renewed discussion among parents about the behavior of young people after school and the risks of confrontations being recorded and shared across social media.

For now, investigators are working to determine exactly what led to the fight and what happened in the moments before the video began.
