Video shows USPS worker swiping iPhones, ring from packages, cops say
A 43-year-old U.S. Postal Service employee from northwest Miami-Dade County was arrested after investigators allegedly recorded him taking three iPhones and an expensive ring from packages, according to police.
The case unfolded in Hialeah, Florida, where authorities said surveillance footage helped document the suspected thefts during the employee’s delivery activities.
Surveillance Footage Allegedly Captured Package Theft
According to reports, investigators installed two surveillance cameras inside a postal vehicle as part of the investigation. The cameras reportedly recorded activity inside the vehicle, including the area where packages were carried.
Police said footage from October 14 showed the employee opening four packages. Three allegedly contained iPhones, while another contained a ring.
Investigators also reported finding discarded packaging and shipping labels connected to the incident. Authorities said the employee was not authorized to open the packages or keep their contents.
Stolen Items Valued at Nearly $6,600
The three phones and ring were valued at approximately $6,597 before applicable taxes, according to the police report cited by local media.
The items reportedly included two iPhone 18 Pro devices and one iPhone 18 Pro Max, along with a ring valued at approximately $2,549.
Investigators said the packages were outside the employee’s normal delivery route. The findings helped authorities build the case that led to his arrest.
Charges and Investigation
Jail records cited in local reporting identified the employee as Avery Terrill Yarber. He was reportedly arrested by Hialeah police and faces charges of third-degree grand theft and mail theft.
The U.S. Postal Service has said that allegations of mail theft involving its employees are treated seriously and investigated by its Office of Inspector General.
The case highlights concerns about the security of packages entrusted to delivery services. Customers who suspect mail theft can report their concerns to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
Yarber’s arrest is an allegation, not a determination of guilt. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Source: WPLG Local 10
