Disturbing surveillance video captured the moment two dogs attacked a jogger and two other people in a Dix Hills, Long Island, neighborhood, leaving residents shaken and prompting authorities to take action.

The attack happened on August 10, when two dogs were seen roaming outside a home before suddenly chasing a woman who was jogging down the street. The dogs knocked her to the ground and attacked her for several minutes.

Good Samaritan and Husband Also Attacked

A good Samaritan attempted to intervene, but the dogs turned on him as well.

Moments later, the jogger's husband, Larry Ballerau, arrived and was also attacked. Ballerau said he tried repeatedly to get the dogs off him as they continued biting him.

He suffered bruises, cuts and slashes across his body. His wife was also injured and has reportedly become afraid to leave the house following the attack.

Neighbors Say It Wasn't the First Incident

Residents told CBS News that the same two dogs had allegedly attacked an 11-year-old bicyclist in July.

The incidents have left neighbors concerned about safety in the area, with some saying they fear the dogs could seriously injure another person if they escape again.

Owners Defend Their Dogs

The dogs' owners, Helen Tarnaras and her daughter Anastasia Tarnaras, defended the animals, identified as Buddy and Henna.

The owners said Henna is an 18-month-old rescue dog who had previously been abused. They also said the dogs escaped after gates were accidentally left open—first by gardeners and later by a real estate agent.

The family said they have since padlocked the gate and insisted the dogs are not inherently vicious.

Judge Orders Dogs Removed

Following the August 10 attack, the owners received notices related to state and town violations involving animal containment and control.

A judge has ordered the dogs to be removed from the home and taken to an animal shelter operated by the Town of Huntington. Another court hearing is scheduled for August 26, where the case will continue.

The court will ultimately determine whether the dogs should legally be designated as dangerous, which could result in strict confinement requirements or potentially euthanasia.

The investigation and legal proceedings remain ongoing.
