UCLA's Betts Comes Out On Mental Issues, Dawn Staley Calls

UCLA’s Lauren Betts opened up about her mental health struggles, including depression and a hospital stay during her sophomore season, and said she wants people to know she is doing better but that mental health is an ongoing process. Her honesty drew praise from UCLA coach Cori Close, who called her vulnerability courageous and inspiring.

Dawn Staley’s response

South Carolina coach Dawn Staley also reached out to Betts after reading her account, and Betts thanked her for the support. Staley said she wanted to help by offering positivity and reminding Betts she matters, which Betts later said had a meaningful impact on her.

Why it resonates

Betts’ story has stood out because she spoke openly about suicidal thoughts, getting help, and learning that asking for support was the right move. That kind of transparency helps reduce stigma and shows that even elite athletes can face serious mental health challenges.
