Students take control of bus after driver has medical episode

Five Mississippi middle school students are being praised as heroes after they took control of a school bus when the driver had an asthma attack and lost consciousness. The students grabbed the wheel, hit the brakes, called 911, and helped get the bus safely stopped on a median before anyone was seriously hurt.

What happened

Leah Taylor was driving a bus carrying about 40 students in Hancock County when she became ill and passed out. Surveillance video shows the children reacting quickly as the bus began veering, with multiple students stepping in to help stabilize the vehicle.

Why it stands out

Officials say the students’ teamwork likely prevented a much worse outcome. The district later honored them at a pep rally and said they’ll be treated to a celebratory lunch outing.
