Special forces soldier charged with making bets on U.S. capture of Maduro

A U.S. special forces soldier, identified as Gannon Ken Van Dyke, has been charged with using classified information tied to the Maduro capture operation to place prediction-market bets. Prosecutors say he wagered about $33,000 and ended up making more than $400,000.

What he’s accused of

Federal officials say Van Dyke was involved in planning and execution of the mission that captured Nicolás Maduro, then used nonpublic information to bet on the outcome through Polymarket. The indictment includes charges such as unauthorized use of confidential government data, wire fraud, and illegal monetary transactions.

Why it matters

The case is drawing attention because it combines national security, insider trading-style allegations, and prediction markets in one headline-grabbing prosecution. It also raises questions about how classified operational knowledge can be exploited for personal profit.
