Sean "Diddy" Combs' lawyers appeal prostitution-related conviction

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ lawyers have appealed his prostitution-related conviction and prison sentence, arguing he should be released or at least resentenced because the judge relied on conduct the jury did not find. They say the conviction should be overturned because the case involved consenting adults, while prosecutors and the court treated the conduct much more harshly than is typical for Mann Act cases.

What the appeal argues

Combs’ legal team says the evidence did not support the conviction and that the sentencing judge improperly considered acquitted charges like racketeering and sex trafficking when setting the punishment. They are asking the appeals court for immediate release, a full acquittal, or a reduced sentence.

Background

A jury found Combs guilty of two interstate prostitution counts, but cleared him of the more serious racketeering and sex trafficking charges. He is serving a 50-month sentence and has already indicated he plans to keep challenging the ruling.
