Robin Williams' family fights against AI abuse

Robin Williams’ Family Fights Back Against AI Abuse of His Likeness

Published: August 20, 2026

The children of late Hollywood legend Robin Williams are taking steps to protect their father's legacy from what they describe as the growing misuse of his voice and likeness through artificial intelligence.

Williams' three children—Zak, Zelda and Cody Williams—recently reactivated their father's official Instagram account after it had been inactive for 12 years. The family says they want the page to become a trusted place where fans can find authentic photos, videos, memories and moments from Williams' life and career.

Fighting Back Against AI Impersonations

The decision comes as AI-generated videos and other digital recreations of celebrities have become increasingly common online.

Zelda Williams, who has previously spoken out against AI recreations of her father, said the renewed Instagram presence is one way the family can combat what she called “rampant AI abuse” of Robin Williams' voice and likeness.

She has previously asked people to stop sending her AI-generated videos depicting her father, saying the content was upsetting and disrespectful to his legacy.

Creating a Trusted Space for Fans

The siblings said they want their father's official social media presence to offer fans an authentic alternative to AI-generated impersonations.

In their statement, Zak, Zelda and Cody explained that they hope the account will remain a “safe, trusted place” where stories, photographs, videos and memories reflect their father's legacy with authenticity and care.

The account will also direct fans toward official social media channels featuring genuine clips from Williams' career, including his stand-up comedy and memorable performances.

Honoring Robin Williams’ Legacy

Robin Williams died in 2014 at age 63, leaving behind a celebrated career that included iconic films such as Mrs. Doubtfire, Jumanji, Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society.

The family's decision comes as a new generation continues discovering Williams' work. By sharing authentic material directly through his official accounts, his children hope to preserve the actor and comedian's real voice, humor and humanity.

For the Williams family, the fight against AI misuse isn't simply about technology. It's about making sure their father's legacy is remembered through the real person and the genuine work he left behind.
