Rita Wilson, 69, Debuts MASSIVE Back Tattoo That Matches Son Chet Hanks' Ink!
The 69-year-old actress and singer surprised fans when she shared a topless photo showing off a massive cross design covering much of her back. The striking artwork looks remarkably similar to the large cross tattoo Chet has on his own back.
Wilson shared the photo on Instagram as she promoted her new song, “Stranger With Age.”
“STRANGER WITH AGE? Who? Me? I’m lovin’ it!” she wrote in the caption.
A Tattoo With a Family Connection
The resemblance between Wilson's tattoo and Chet's didn't go unnoticed.
Chet, 36, who is Wilson's son with actor Tom Hanks, has a large cross tattoo of his own. Photos of his body art have circulated for years, making the similarity between the two designs particularly striking.
Wilson's version stretches from the upper portion of her back toward her lower back, with an intricate geometric pattern inside the cross.
The actress also appeared to have additional ink on her arm, including a sun-like design that resembles another tattoo Chet has. Some lettering on her arm also appears to read “Happy Birthday Chet.”
Is Rita's Tattoo Permanent?
That's still unclear.
Although Wilson presented the artwork as part of her Instagram photo carousel, reports have noted that she has not confirmed whether the massive back design is permanent. Some outlets have questioned whether the image could feature temporary or staged body art.
So while fans got a very convincing look at Wilson covered in ink, it remains unknown whether she'll be sporting the design permanently.
The Reveal Came With a New Song
The tattoo reveal was part of a playful social media post promoting Wilson's latest music.
Her new song, “Stranger With Age,” celebrates getting older and embracing new experiences rather than trying to hide from them. Wilson has leaned into that theme as she approaches another milestone birthday, turning 70 in October.
The post also included photos of Wilson surfing, posing in a colorful photo setup and making playful faces — making the giant tattoo only one part of a very carefree photo dump.
Chet Isn't the Only Family Connection
Wilson and Chet have shared creative connections before.
The two have both pursued music, and they previously collaborated on Wilson's 2018 song “Heart He Handed Down.” Chet has also spoken publicly about his faith and the meaning behind his own tattoos.
Now, their matching cross designs have given fans another unexpected connection between mother and son.
