New details are emerging about the death of actress Hayden Panettiere, with multiple law enforcement sources reportedly telling TMZ that investigators believe she may have taken an oxycodone pill that was laced with fentanyl shortly before her death.

Panettiere, known for her roles in Heroes and Nashville, died Aug. 16 in Greenville, South Carolina. She was 36.

The reported fentanyl connection has not been officially confirmed. Toxicology results are still pending, and the Greenville County Coroner's Office has not issued a final cause or manner of death.

Investigators Focus on a Suspected Drug Source

According to the report, investigators believe Panettiere obtained black-market prescription medications from a longtime drug dealer in Los Angeles.

Authorities are reportedly examining the source of the drugs and attempting to determine whether a single oxycodone pill taken the morning of her death contained fentanyl.

The Drug Enforcement Administration is now involved in the investigation, according to reports, as authorities work to trace where the suspected pill came from.

Reports indicate Panettiere had taken several substances during a flight from Los Angeles to South Carolina the day before she died. Investigators are now examining what she took and when, as they work to establish what caused her death.

She Was Found in Cardiac Arrest

Panettiere was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville County on Aug. 16.

Emergency responders arrived after a 911 call reporting a cardiac arrest and attempted advanced life support. She was pronounced dead at approximately 2:32 p.m.

An autopsy found no signs of physical trauma that would have contributed to her death. At the time, officials said the cause and manner of death remained pending additional investigation and testing.

The Greenville Police Department also said its preliminary investigation had not indicated signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.

Narcan Was Reportedly Used

Panettiere's former boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother Zach were reportedly present when she was found.

According to reports, Narcan was administered in an attempt to reverse a possible opioid overdose. Hickerson also reportedly showed police a bag containing medications that Panettiere was taking.

Neither Hickerson nor his brother has been charged in connection with Panettiere's death, and authorities have not publicly concluded that an overdose was the official cause.

Panettiere Had Been Open About Addiction

Panettiere had spoken publicly about her struggles with alcohol and prescription drugs throughout her life.

In her recently released memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, she detailed her experiences with addiction, mental health challenges and the pressures of growing up in Hollywood.

Her history has added another layer to the investigation, but authorities are still working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding her death.

Official Cause of Death Still Pending

The reported fentanyl-laced oxycodone theory is not yet an official finding.

The coroner's office continues to await toxicology and other investigative results that could determine whether fentanyl, oxycodone or another substance played a role in Panettiere's death.

For now, investigators are focusing on the suspected drug supply while Panettiere's family continues to mourn the actress, who became a familiar face to television audiences through Heroes, Nashville and other projects.
