Rep. Gonzales says he will ‘retire’ tomorrow after sexual misconduct accusations

Rep. Tony Gonzales said he will file for retirement when Congress returns, following sexual misconduct allegations and mounting pressure over his conduct with staffers. Reports say his announcement came after an affair with a staffer became public, along with separate allegations from another former campaign staffer about inappropriate text messages.

What’s driving the move

Coverage says the House Ethics Committee opened an investigation into whether Gonzales engaged in sexual misconduct toward an employee in his office and gave unfair favors or privileges. His decision also came as bipartisan expulsion efforts were being discussed in Congress.

Timing

His retirement is not necessarily immediate; reports say he plans to file once Congress is back in session, and it was not fully clear whether he will remain in office until then. Gonzales had already said he would not seek reelection.
