Nursing profession sees major boom

The nursing profession is seeing a major boom because demand is staying high while the workforce struggles to keep up. Federal projections show registered nurse employment is expected to grow about 5% from 2024 to 2034, with roughly 189,100 openings each year, while nurse practitioner jobs are projected to grow about 35% over the same period.

Why demand is rising

An aging population is creating more need for care, and many nurses are also retiring or leaving the field, which keeps vacancies open. The post-pandemic health care backlog also means hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities still need more staff.

What it means for workers

For people entering the field, this is a strong job market with plenty of openings and room to specialize. It is especially favorable for advanced practice roles like nurse practitioners, where growth is much faster than average.

Why it’s getting attention

The bigger story is that nursing is becoming one of the most reliable career paths even as AI reshapes other industries. That makes it stand out as a profession with both stability and long-term demand.
