Nirvana Receives the VMA Video Vanguard Award | 2026 VMAs
The band received the Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 27, honoring the group's lasting influence on music, culture and the music-video era. The award came 34 years after Nirvana first appeared at the VMAs.
Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and longtime touring guitarist Pat Smear reunited onstage to accept the honor.
Pat Smear Steals the Moment
While Novoselic delivered the acceptance speech, Smear unexpectedly became one of the night's most talked-about moments when he lit a cigarette and smoked it onstage.
The image immediately caught attention online, with fans reacting to the very rock-and-roll move during one of MTV's biggest nights.
For some fans, the cigarette also felt like a fitting nod to Nirvana's rebellious history and late frontman Kurt Cobain, although Smear did not publicly explain the gesture as a tribute.
Remembering Kurt Cobain
Cobain's presence was felt throughout the tribute.
A video montage played before the band members took the stage, featuring footage connected to some of Nirvana's most iconic music videos, including “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “In Bloom,” “Come As You Are” and “Heart-Shaped Box.”
Novoselic used his acceptance speech to recognize Cobain's creative vision, calling him “one of the greatest artists of all time” and saying, “Kurt was one of one.”
“People Are Still Hungry for Authenticity”
Novoselic also reflected on why Nirvana's music continues to resonate decades after the band's original run.
He said the group remains meaningful because people are still looking for authenticity and something uncompromising — a sentiment that has become closely associated with Nirvana's legacy.
Grohl did not speak during the acceptance, allowing Novoselic to deliver the remarks on behalf of the band.
A Historic Night for Nirvana
The Video Vanguard honor marks the first time a rock band has received the award since Duran Duran in 2003. Nirvana's recognition also comes during a year when MTV removed the rock category from the VMAs, adding another layer of significance to the band's celebration.
There was no Nirvana performance during the ceremony, but the reunion itself gave longtime fans a memorable moment.
And with Novoselic reflecting on Cobain's legacy and Smear casually lighting up beside him, Nirvana's appearance managed to feel unmistakably like Nirvana — decades after the band's music first changed MTV.
