Why critics are upset
Reviewers have called the film a “whitewash” and a “cleaned-up” version of Jackson’s story, arguing that a biopic about his life should at least acknowledge the accusations and fallout. Some criticism also focuses on the film’s heavy reliance on music biopic clichés and its tendency to lean into Jackson’s fame while avoiding the darker parts of his history.
Family and estate tension
The project has also drawn attention because of reported discomfort from members of Jackson’s family, including Paris Jackson’s distance from the film. At the same time, estate advisers have framed the movie as a way to preserve and renew Jackson’s cultural legacy, which adds another layer to the debate.
The bigger issue
The controversy is really about whether a biopic can tell an honest version of a complicated public figure without becoming either a takedown or a hagiography. In Jackson’s case, that balance is especially difficult because the film has to deal with one of music’s most celebrated careers alongside one of its most enduring scandals.
