Meghan Markle responds to allegations against father
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, says she is “deeply distressed” following reports that her estranged father, Thomas Markle, is being investigated in the Philippines over allegations involving child sexual abuse images.
Philippine authorities confirmed that an investigation is underway after Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan’s half-brother, reportedly alerted police to material he allegedly discovered at his father’s former home in Cebu. The allegations have not been established as fact, and Thomas Markle has denied wrongdoing.
Meghan Markle Speaks Out
In a statement released on October 23, Meghan said her thoughts were with any children who may have been harmed and expressed hope that the investigation would prioritize their safety.
She also revealed that she had learned of troubling allegations against her father in 2018, after a letter was sent to London’s Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection. Meghan said the letter was subsequently shared with her and that she had been assured the concerns were being investigated.
Meghan has been estranged from her father for years. She said her decision to keep her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, from having contact with him was made to protect them.
Her statement has renewed attention on the strained relationship between the duchess and her father, which became widely known in the lead-up to her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry.
Philippine Authorities Investigate Allegations
The Philippines’ Department of Justice confirmed that its anti-trafficking and online child sexual abuse and exploitation task force in Cebu is investigating the matter.
According to reports, Thomas Markle Jr. said he found suspected illegal material among items at his father’s home and provided information to authorities. Philippine officials have also confirmed that digital evidence, including a laptop reportedly linked to Thomas Markle Sr., is undergoing investigation. Authorities have said forensic examination is needed before conclusions can be reached.
The FBI has acknowledged awareness of the allegations and said it would support Philippine authorities as appropriate, including investigating any potential violations of U.S. federal law. London’s Metropolitan Police has also said it is making inquiries into reports concerning the letter sent in 2018.
Thomas Markle Denies the Allegations
Thomas Markle, 82, has strongly denied the accusations in comments reported by British media, describing them as false and saying he had never downloaded such material. He has also said he would welcome an investigation.
No finding of guilt has been announced. Investigators must examine the reported evidence and establish the facts before any conclusions can be drawn.
A Case With Royal and International Attention
The investigation has drawn attention because of Meghan’s public profile and the family’s long-standing estrangement. However, the central issue remains the investigation into the alleged material and the need to protect children while ensuring that claims are examined fairly.
Meghan has called for justice to be served and for the safety of children to remain the priority. Philippine authorities have indicated that their investigation is continuing.
