Maui doctor accused of trying to kill wife found guilty of attempted manslaughter

A Maui doctor accused of trying to kill his wife was found guilty of attempted manslaughter, a lesser charge than attempted murder. Jurors reportedly deliberated for about eight hours before reaching a unanimous verdict, and sentencing is set for later this year.

What the jury decided

The conviction was based on attempted manslaughter under severe or extreme mental or emotional disturbance. Prosecutors had accused Gerhardt Konig of attacking his wife during a birthday hike on Oahu, including hitting her with a rock and trying to inject her with a syringe.

Case background

Konig had pleaded not guilty and his defense argued that he acted in self-defense during a struggle on the trail. The charge stemmed from a March 2025 incident on the Pali Puka Trail, where his wife was left with head and facial injuries.

What happens next

The conviction carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for August 13, 2026.
