Manhunt underway after Georgia officer killed

A Georgia police officer was shot and killed late Tuesday night in Warm Springs, triggering a statewide manhunt and a Blue Alert for a 23-year-old suspect, authorities said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the fallen officer as Chris Fisher of the Warm Springs Police Department.

According to the GBI, the shooting happened around 11:57 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the Meriwether Country Inn on Spring Street.

Fisher had just finished an unrelated traffic stop and was sitting in his patrol vehicle when a black 2026 Chevrolet Silverado pulled alongside him. Investigators said the driver, later identified as Jimmie Lee Steverson, opened fire, striking Fisher multiple times.

Fisher was pronounced dead at the scene.

Blue Alert Issued for Suspect

Following the shooting, the GBI issued a statewide Blue Alert for Steverson, warning that he was considered armed and dangerous.

Authorities released a description of Steverson and said he was last seen in Warm Springs wearing a black T-shirt and black gym shorts. Investigators also provided information about the Chevrolet Silverado believed to be connected to the shooting.

Residents were urged not to approach Steverson if they saw him and instead call 911 immediately.

The search involved multiple law enforcement agencies as investigators worked to locate the suspect.

Suspect Located in South Carolina

The manhunt came to an end Wednesday morning after deputies in Anderson County, South Carolina, stopped a vehicle on Interstate 85.

Steverson was reportedly a passenger in the vehicle. Authorities said he was found suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The GBI later confirmed that Steverson was pronounced dead at the hospital. Two other people who were inside the vehicle were detained, but officials said they had not been charged.

Fisher Remembered as a Dedicated Officer

Fisher had only recently joined the Warm Springs Police Department. Records show he began working for the department in May 2026 and was promoted to sergeant in July.

Before joining Warm Springs police, Fisher had worked with several other law enforcement agencies, including the Meriwether County Sheriff's Office, Fayette County Sheriff's Office and Heard County Sheriff's Office.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp expressed his condolences to Fisher's family and fellow officers, calling his death a tragic reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face while serving their communities.

"Marty, the girls, and I are deeply saddened this morning by the news that Officer Chris Fisher has been killed," Kemp said.

The GBI said Fisher's body was transported to its Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. The investigation remains active, and authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances or motive behind the shooting.
