Lil Jon on New Memoir, Navigating Grief Over the Loss of His Son
Rapper and music producer Lil Jon is sharing a deeply personal side of his life, opening up about the loss of his son, the discovery that the man who raised him was not his biological father, and how returning to the stage has helped him navigate grief.
During an appearance on NBC’s TODAY, the Grammy-winning artist discussed his first memoir, I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me, released October 20, 2026. The book explores his childhood, his rise through Atlanta’s music scene, and the personal experiences that shaped him beyond his larger-than-life public persona.
Finding a Way Through Grief
One of the most painful chapters of Lil Jon’s life has been the death of his son, Nathan Smith, also known as DJ Young Slade, who died at 27 in February 2026. His death was ruled an accidental drowning.
As he continues to process the loss, Lil Jon said performing and touring have offered moments of comfort, helping him reconnect with the energy of audiences and the people around him.
“I realized I hadn't given myself time to really grieve,” he said during the TODAY interview. “And, that I needed to be on that stage to feel the positivity from the audience and to be on tour and to learn to laugh again with my crew and to just have a good time again.”
While music has helped him find moments of joy, the rapper has been candid about the difficulty of losing a child. He has explained that staying busy initially made it harder to recognize how much grief he was holding inside.
In sharing his experience, Lil Jon is also speaking to the complicated reality of mourning: finding reasons to keep going while still making room for pain, memories, and healing.
A Life-Changing Family Discovery
The memoir also details another unexpected revelation. Lil Jon recently learned that Willie, the man who raised him, was not his biological father.
The discovery followed questions raised by a cousin’s DNA test. With the people who raised him and his biological father no longer alive, the news left the musician facing unanswered questions about his family history.
He has described the revelation as difficult to process, adding another deeply personal layer to a period already marked by significant loss.
More Than the Music
Known for high-energy hits such as “Get Low,” “Turn Down for What,” and “Yeah!,” Lil Jon built a career around music that gets audiences moving. His memoir offers readers a closer look at the person behind that unmistakable stage presence.
Through stories of his upbringing, career, family, and personal challenges, he reflects on how his life has changed and what he hopes others might learn from his experiences.
By speaking openly about grief, family revelations, and the role music has played in his healing, Lil Jon is showing that even those who bring joy to millions can face profound struggles away from the spotlight.
His journey is still unfolding, but his willingness to share it offers a reminder that healing does not mean forgetting a loved one. Sometimes, it means learning how to carry the loss while finding moments of connection, laughter, and hope again.
