What is a rip current?
A rip current is a powerful, narrow channel of water that flows away from the shoreline. It can quickly pull even experienced swimmers away from the beach.
If you're caught in a rip current
Lifeguards recommend these steps:
Stay calm. Panicking wastes energy.
Don't try to swim straight back to shore against the current—it can quickly exhaust you.
Swim parallel to the shoreline until you're out of the current.
Once free, swim diagonally back toward the beach.
If you can't escape, float or tread water and signal for help by waving and calling out.
Beach safety tips
Swim near a lifeguard whenever possible.
Check beach warning flags and weather conditions before entering the water.
Never swim alone.
Keep a close eye on children, even in shallow water.
Bottom line
Rip currents can be dangerous, but they're survivable if you know what to do. The key is not to fight the current—swim parallel to shore, conserve your energy, and alert a lifeguard if you need assistance.
