King Charles Makes Clear: Prince Harry and Meghan Mark AREN’T Back in the Firm After UK Return
On Sept. 7, the King issued a formal letter through the Lord Chamberlain, the most senior official in the Royal Household, reaffirming that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain non-working royals and private citizens. The unusual move was intended to prevent any “doubt or confusion” over their status following their recent return to Britain.
The letter was sent to Harry’s team as well as government departments, military officials and Lord Lieutenants, who can be involved in royal visits and official engagements.
No Return to Royal Duties
According to the letter, there has been “no change” to the couple’s status since they stepped back from royal duties in 2020.
Harry and Meghan remain unable to use the styles His Royal Highness and Her Royal Highness, which remain in abeyance. Any charitable activities they undertake will continue to be carried out privately rather than on behalf of the Crown.
Their Sussex office will also continue to operate separately from the Royal Household.
The arrangement stems from the so-called Sandringham Agreement, which ruled out a “half-in, half-out” role that would have allowed Harry and Meghan to maintain commercial independence while also representing the monarch.
The Sussexes Were Reportedly Surprised
The timing and manner of the announcement appear to have caught Harry and Meghan off guard.
A spokesperson for the couple said they were “a little surprised” that they had not been informed about the letter before it was released publicly. Reports said their team received the correspondence shortly before its release and attempted to address questions surrounding its contents.
Palace sources, however, have disputed the suggestion that the couple had no prior knowledge, saying the letter had been shared with their team before becoming public.
The Palace has indicated that releasing the letter was intended to promote transparency and prevent confusion about how Harry and Meghan should be treated during their time in Britain.
Harry and Meghan Are Back in the UK
The clarification comes just weeks after the Sussexes returned to Britain with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
The family arrived from California on Aug. 26 as they begin establishing a longer-term base in the UK. Their children are expected to attend school in Britain, while Harry and Meghan continue their personal and charitable work.
Their return has naturally fueled speculation about whether living closer to King Charles could eventually lead to a reconciliation with the wider Royal Family.
But the King's letter makes clear that moving back to Britain does not mean moving back into the Firm.
Harry Spotted Working on a Mystery Project
Amid the royal drama, Harry has already been getting back to work.
The Duke was recently spotted at Tower Bridge Studios in London, marking his first public sighting since returning to the UK. He reportedly spent most of Sept. 4 at the video and podcasting facility working on an undisclosed project.
The studio later shared photographs of Harry signing its celebrity wall and thanked him for choosing the facility. The booking was reportedly made by an independent production company, while the details of the project remain private.
Whatever Harry is working on, it appears to be firmly separate from any official royal role.
Security Remains a Major Issue
The couple's security arrangements in Britain also remain unresolved.
Harry has previously challenged decisions regarding his publicly funded police protection when visiting the UK. The King's letter reiterated that operational security matters should be directed to the relevant police authorities, while decisions concerning royal and VIP security fall under the Royal and VIP Executive Committee, known as RAVEC.
For now, Harry and Meghan remain responsible for their private activities and commercial interests while living in Britain.
A Return to Britain, But Not to the Firm
Harry and Meghan's move back to the UK puts them physically closer to the Royal Family, but King Charles' message leaves little room for interpretation about their official position.
They can live in Britain, raise their children there, pursue business ventures and support causes they care about — but they will do so as private citizens, not working royals.
And with Harry already working on an undisclosed project in London, the Sussexes appear ready to build their next chapter in Britain on their own terms.
