In a new interview with Vogue, the 24-year-old model and actress reflected on growing up alongside Presley and their famous mother, Cindy Crawford, and how those experiences shaped her.
“I started to self-identify as the easy one”
Kaia explained that watching her family navigate Presley's difficulties influenced her tendency to keep her own problems to herself.
“I think that’s also why I started to self-identify as the easy one and never wanted to ask for help.”
She explained that it felt overwhelming for her parents to have two children who needed significant attention and support, so she learned to minimize her own needs.
Rather than asking for help, Kaia became accustomed to being the child who was “fine.”
How her brother's struggles affected her
Kaia's comments offer a glimpse into the way addiction can affect an entire family—not just the person struggling with it.
Her experience led her to become more independent and reluctant to burden others, but she also recognizes that constantly presenting herself as the “easy” child meant that her own needs could sometimes go unspoken.
Growing up as Cindy Crawford's daughter
The Vogue interview also touches on the complicated reality of growing up as the daughter of one of the world's most recognizable supermodels.
Kaia began modeling as a teenager and has spent much of her adult life under intense public scrutiny. While having Cindy Crawford as a mother gave her an extraordinary introduction to the fashion industry, Kaia has acknowledged that being a “nepo baby” also comes with its own pressures and expectations.
She has previously said she recognizes how much she has benefited from her family's name while also feeling the need to work harder because of the scrutiny that comes with it.
A more personal side of Kaia
Her latest comments show a side of Kaia that is rarely seen in fashion coverage. Instead of focusing on modeling, celebrity or her career, she is reflecting on family dynamics, emotional independence and learning that it's okay to need help.
Her relationship with Presley remains private, and Kaia did not go into extensive detail about his recovery or current circumstances.
Bottom line
Kaia Gerber's reflections reveal how her brother Presley's addiction affected her in ways that weren't always obvious. She learned to become “the easy one,” suppressing her own needs so her family wouldn't have another source of worry. Now, she appears to be recognizing that taking care of herself and asking for help are just as important.
