How Anna Wintour came to embrace Miranda Priestly

Anna Wintour didn’t exactly “embrace” Miranda Priestly right away; she mostly spent years treating the comparisons with dry detachment and a bit of amusement. Over time, though, she seems to have softened toward the character, especially as The Devil Wears Prada became such a lasting part of pop culture, and her recent comments suggest she’s comfortable leaving it up to others to decide how much Miranda resembles her.

How it changed

Wintour has said she’s more interested in the creative side of her work than in managing her public image, including the iconic bob, sunglasses, and the Miranda parallels. She also made clear that she doesn’t spend much time thinking about whether she should live up to the reputation people project onto her.

Why she’s more open now

The big shift seems to be that the character is no longer just a jab at her reputation; it’s become part of fashion history and a permanent cultural reference point. In that sense, Wintour appears to have made peace with Miranda Priestly as a fictional mirror of the era, not a personal attack.
