Hospital Staff Race to Rescue Babies as NICU Goes Up in Flames

Dramatic CCTV footage shows hospital staff rushing to save newborn babies after a fire broke out inside a neonatal intensive care unit in Maharashtra, India.

The fire erupted in the early hours of September 4 at Asian Hospital in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Smoke was reportedly first noticed coming from an air-conditioning unit inside the NICU, where nine newborns were receiving intensive or specialized medical care.

As smoke quickly filled the area, hospital employees moved into action. CCTV footage captured staff members carrying the fragile infants out of the affected ward as firefighters and emergency personnel responded to the scene.

Nine Newborns Safely Evacuated

The babies were among 58 patients on the affected floor, including patients in a general ward and special rooms.

Hospital staff evacuated the newborns first and then helped move the other patients to safety. The nine infants were subsequently transferred to other hospitals so they could continue receiving medical care.

Five of the newborns were taken to Ghati Government Medical College and Hospital, three were transferred to MGM Hospital and one was taken to Sanjeevani Hospital, according to local reporting.

Fortunately, no deaths or injuries were reported in connection with the fire.

Firefighters Battle Heavy Smoke

Fire crews rushed to the hospital as staff continued evacuating patients.

Several fire tenders were deployed, and firefighters encountered heavy smoke around the NICU and portions of the building. The blaze was brought under control in a relatively short period, with hospital officials crediting employees' training and quick response for helping prevent a potentially catastrophic outcome.

Hospital Managing Director Shoeb Hashmi said employees immediately followed their emergency procedures after discovering the smoke.

The hospital's fire safety system and the staff's familiarity with emergency protocols also helped the evacuation move quickly.

Cause of Fire Under Investigation

Preliminary reports have pointed to a possible electrical short circuit involving the NICU's air-conditioning system, although authorities have not yet established a final cause.

Officials are also reviewing the hospital's fire-safety documentation as part of the response to the incident.

The fire comes only days after another serious NICU fire in Maharashtra. On Aug. 24, a blaze at a government hospital in Amravati killed three newborns and prompted a high-level inquiry, putting additional attention on fire safety in hospitals caring for vulnerable infants.

A Race Against Time

The images from Asian Hospital show just how quickly a hospital emergency can turn critical, particularly inside a NICU where patients cannot simply walk or move themselves to safety.

In this case, the rapid response from hospital workers helped ensure that all nine newborns were evacuated before the fire could cause loss of life.

The babies were transferred to other medical facilities, and hospital services have since resumed.

For the doctors, nurses and staff members who rushed toward the danger to carry the infants to safety, the priority was simple: get the babies out.
