Highway Patrol Officer Rescues Dog Abandoned on Ohio Highway
On Aug. 23, Trooper John Kronander discovered an abandoned pit bull puppy inside a crate near Interstate 71. The puppy had been left with no food or water, according to authorities.
Body camera footage released by the Ohio State Highway Patrol shows Kronander approaching the crate, which had cardboard covering part of it. He gently removed the covering and spoke reassuringly to the frightened animal.
“We’ll get you out of here, okay? Someone left you. It’s okay,” Kronander can be heard telling the puppy.
The Puppy Quickly Warms Up to His Rescuer
Once the puppy was freed from the crate, his mood appeared to change almost instantly.
Rather than remaining frightened, the energetic dog began playing with Kronander. The trooper used a plastic bottle as a makeshift toy as the puppy pawed at it and wagged his tail.
“How long you been here? You pawing me? Oh my gosh,” Kronander said while interacting with the dog.
The trooper eventually gained the puppy's trust enough to pick him up and place him inside his patrol vehicle.
“Will you get mad if I pick you up?” Kronander asked before carefully carrying him to the cruiser.
The Puppy Was Taken to Safety
After the rescue, the puppy was brought to the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Medina Post and later transferred to the Medina County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Sgt. Jeremy Kindler praised Kronander's response, saying his compassion reflected the Patrol's commitment to serving the community.
Kindler also noted that Kronander is a father and said his “fatherly instincts” appeared to come through while caring for the abandoned puppy.
The Medina County SPCA said the puppy had been placed in serious danger by whoever left him along the busy interstate. The organization appealed to the public for information that could help identify the person responsible.
From Abandoned Puppy to “Miles”
The story ultimately took a happy turn.
The puppy, later named Miles, has found a permanent home. The Medina County SPCA confirmed that Miles was adopted by one of Kronander's friends, who also works in law enforcement.
Kronander's connection with the dog also hasn't ended completely. There is reportedly discussion of arranging a reunion between Miles, his new owner and the trooper who rescued him.
Kronander previously said that if he weren't already a father of two young children, he might have been tempted to take the puppy home himself.
A Rescue That Made a Difference
The circumstances of Miles' abandonment remain troubling, but his rescue serves as a reminder of how quickly a routine act of service can change an animal's life.
For Kronander, it was simply another moment of doing his job — but for one abandoned puppy, his arrival may have made all the difference.
Miles went from being alone in a crate beside a busy highway to having a safe home and a new family.
And it all started when one trooper stopped to take a closer look.
