Seven Killed in Helicopter Crash in Kenya, Including South Florida Friends

Seven people, including a group of friends with ties to South Florida, were killed when a tourist helicopter crashed Wednesday morning in a remote area of northern Kenya.

The helicopter was carrying six passengers and a pilot when it went down near Mount Ololokwe in Samburu County, a region known for its wildlife and safari tourism. There were no survivors.

Five Americans Among Those Killed

Authorities confirmed that five Americans were among the seven people who died.

Among the victims were several people with strong connections to South Florida, including Miami businessman and restaurateur Roger Duarte, as well as José Alberto Suárez, a Telemundo executive who led several Florida stations. Two other South Florida victims were identified as Adam Hlavaty and Henry Parra.

The tragedy has hit the South Florida community particularly hard, with friends and colleagues remembering the victims and mourning the sudden loss.

Crash Happened During Safari Trip

The helicopter was reportedly operating a charter flight connected to a safari excursion. It was traveling from the Loisaba Conservancy toward the Ewaso Nyiro area when it crashed near Mount Ololokwe.

The wreckage was found in rugged terrain, and emergency crews faced difficult conditions while working at the crash site. A fire also broke out following the crash.

Investigation Underway

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

Kenyan aviation authorities are investigating the accident, while the U.S. Embassy is assisting with the American victims and their families.
