Published: August 19, 2026

Frank Beard, the longtime drummer and founding member of the legendary rock band ZZ Top, has died at the age of 77.

Representatives for the band said Beard died Monday at his home in Texas while receiving hospice care.

His death comes just two weeks after ZZ Top canceled a scheduled performance because of Beard's reported “serious health issues.”

A Founding Member of ZZ Top

Beard was a key member of ZZ Top alongside guitarist Billy Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill.

The trio formed the band in Texas in 1969 and went on to become one of the most recognizable acts in rock music. Known for their blues-influenced sound, signature style and hits including “La Grange,” “Tush,” “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Gimme All Your Lovin',” ZZ Top built a career spanning more than five decades.

Despite being known as the band's drummer, Beard's name became part of ZZ Top's identity in another memorable way. While Gibbons and Hill were famous for their long beards, Beard famously remained clean-shaven.

A Lifetime With ZZ Top

Beard remained with ZZ Top throughout the band's decades-long career, making him the only member besides Gibbons to perform on every one of the group's studio albums.

The band continued touring following the death of Dusty Hill in 2021, with Elwood Francis stepping in on bass.

Beard's passing marks another heartbreaking loss for a band whose music has influenced generations of rock fans.

Fans Remember a Rock Legend

News of Beard's death comes as fans around the world remember his contributions to ZZ Top and the band's enduring legacy.

From small Texas clubs to international arenas, Beard spent more than 50 years behind the drum kit, helping create the unmistakable rhythm and sound that became synonymous with ZZ Top.

He leaves behind a remarkable musical legacy and a place in rock history that will endure for generations.
