Florida doctor accused of removing wrong organ from patient

A Florida doctor has been indicted on second-degree manslaughter charges after allegedly removing a patient’s liver instead of his spleen during surgery, which led to the patient’s death. The doctor was identified as Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky, and the patient was 70-year-old William Bryan of Alabama.

What prosecutors allege

Authorities say the surgery was supposed to be a laparoscopic splenectomy on Aug. 21, 2024, but the wrong organ was removed, causing catastrophic blood loss. Prosecutors say Bryan died on the operating table after the mistake.

What happened next

Court records and law enforcement reports say Shaknovsky was arrested and booked in Walton County after the grand jury indictment. Reporting also says his medical license had already been suspended after prior alleged surgical errors.
