Erika Alexander's Iconic Yarn Braids

Erika Alexander’s iconic yarn braids became a defining part of her Living Single era, and she recently revisited the origin story of that look on Sherri. She explained that the style came from Nu-Locs made with yarn, created by hair artist Debra Hare-Bey, and that encouragement from Cicely Tyson helped her embrace the look for her audition.

Why it mattered

The hairstyle wasn’t just memorable, it helped shape Maxine Shaw’s whole image and became a cultural reference point for 90s TV style. The look also stood out because it felt authentic, bold, and different from what audiences were used to seeing on screen at the time.
