An NYPD detective saved her narcotics K-9, Mulk, after the dog was exposed to fentanyl during a Bronx-Manhattan drug bust and started showing signs of overdose. Detective Katherine Gill administered Narcan, and Mulk’s condition improved within minutes.
What happened
CBS News reports that Mulk and her handler were working a major fentanyl case when the dog suddenly became unresponsive, couldn’t walk well, and had pinpoint pupils. Gill realized something was wrong after they returned to the precinct and immediately gave the dog Narcan.
How the rescue worked
Gill described holding Mulk’s nose closed and spraying the Narcan into each nostril, then switching sides to make sure she received the dose. She said Mulk’s eyes perked up again within about five minutes.
Why it matters
The case highlights the danger fentanyl poses not just to people but also to police dogs that work around narcotics scenes. It also shows why many departments now keep naloxone on hand for K-9 units.
Mulk is now back on the job.
