Details About Pastor And Ex-Wife Mica Miller's Marriage Revealed
Miller, a 30-year-old worship leader, was found dead at Lumber River State Park on April 27, 2024, just two days after she served divorce papers to her estranged husband, South Carolina pastor John-Paul “JP” Miller. Her death was ruled a suicide.
The circumstances surrounding her death nevertheless generated widespread questions from her family, friends and supporters, many of whom have publicly raised concerns about her relationship with the pastor.
A Marriage That Began With Controversy
Mica first met John-Paul Miller when she was a teenager and her family attended Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, where Miller served as pastor.
According to the documentary, their relationship eventually developed into an affair while Miller was still married and Mica was working as his assistant. The couple married in 2017, with Miller approximately 15 years older than Mica.
The series examines how their relationship changed over the years, with Mica's family and friends describing what they characterize as a pattern of emotional, spiritual, financial and physical control.
Mica ultimately decided to leave the marriage and began pursuing a divorce.
Allegations of Abuse and Control
One of the most disturbing aspects of the documentary is the collection of allegations made by Mica's loved ones about her marriage.
Friends and family members interviewed for the series allege that Miller controlled various aspects of Mica's life and used his position as her pastor and husband to exert influence over her. They also describe incidents involving alleged threats, harassment and sexual coercion.
Mica herself documented her experiences in a handwritten affidavit filed as part of her divorce proceedings. According to Netflix's account of the case, she wrote that she had been abused “emotionally, sexually, spiritually, financially, and physically.”
The allegations have not been adjudicated in a criminal case involving Mica's death, and Miller has denied wrongdoing through his legal position.
The Final Days Before Her Death
Mica's decision to end the marriage came after years of turmoil, according to people featured in the documentary.
She retained an attorney and filed for divorce in April 2024. A court hearing was scheduled for June 5, but she was found dead before that hearing could take place.
Her family has continued to seek answers about the circumstances surrounding her death, while authorities have maintained the original ruling that she died by suicide.
Netflix's documentary uses Mica's journals, text messages, home videos, church footage and other archival material to reconstruct her life and the events leading up to her death.
Miller Faces Federal Charges
Although John-Paul Miller has not been charged in connection with Mica's death, he was indicted by a federal grand jury in December 2025.
The indictment includes charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators. Prosecutors allege that Miller engaged in a pattern of harassment toward Mica and later lied during the federal investigation. Miller pleaded not guilty. His trial is currently scheduled for October 2026.
Miller declined to comment for the Netflix documentary, according to Netflix.
A New Docuseries Brings Mica's Story to Millions
“Death of the Pastor's Wife” premiered on Netflix on August 26 and places Mica's own voice at the center of the story through journals, recordings and archival footage.
The filmmakers said they wanted the series to focus on Mica as a person rather than allowing the circumstances of her death to define her entire life.
For her family, the documentary represents another opportunity to tell the story of the woman they knew — a talented singer, worship leader, sister and friend whose life ended at just 30 years old.
The case continues to raise difficult questions about domestic abuse, coercive control, institutional accountability and how victims can be protected when they are trying to leave abusive relationships.
As the federal case against Miller moves toward trial, Mica's story continues to receive renewed attention — and her family's search for answers remains ongoing.
