More than three decades after the murder of American tourist Amy Lopez, investigators have finally identified a suspect using modern DNA analysis.

An 81-year-old man is now on trial in Germany after DNA evidence linked him to the 1994 killing of the 24-year-old Lopez in Koblenz. The breakthrough came after investigators revisited evidence from the decades-old cold case using newer forensic techniques.

A Murder That Remained Unsolved for Decades

Lopez was visiting Koblenz on September 26, 1994, when prosecutors say she was lured into a secluded room at the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.

According to prosecutors, the man—who was 49 at the time—sexually assaulted Lopez and fatally attacked her. Her body was discovered shortly afterward by children who were playing nearby.

For more than 30 years, the case remained unresolved.

DNA Provides a Breakthrough

Investigators preserved DNA traces from the crime scene, including evidence recovered from Lopez's clothing.

Advances in forensic DNA analysis eventually allowed investigators to take another look at the evidence. After the now-81-year-old man provided a DNA sample in 2026, authorities were able to match it to the evidence connected to Lopez's killing.

The suspect was arrested in February 2026 at a nursing home in the Koblenz area and has remained in custody since then.

Defendant Admits to the Killing

The defendant has admitted to killing Lopez during the opening of his trial in Koblenz.

However, prosecutors allege that the killing was committed for sexual motives. The defendant has reportedly acknowledged the killing while saying he has partial memory gaps regarding some details of what happened.

The trial is expected to continue through September, with a verdict anticipated later this year.
