California woman arrested over alleged arms dealing for Iran

A California woman was arrested at LAX and accused of brokering arms deals on behalf of Iran, including sales involving drones, explosives, bomb fuses, assault rifles, and ammunition. Prosecutors say Shamim Mafi, a Woodland Hills resident and lawful permanent U.S. resident, was taken into custody while trying to fly to Turkey and could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

What prosecutors allege

Court documents say Mafi acted as an intermediary for Iranian intelligence and used a front company to move weapons deals through overseas entities. Reports say investigators believe she communicated with an Iranian intelligence officer dozens of times and used encrypted messaging to coordinate the transactions.

Why it matters

The case shows how sanctions enforcement and foreign-arms trafficking can overlap with business fronts and international payment routes. It also adds to broader U.S. scrutiny of alleged Iranian efforts to generate revenue through weapons sales and covert commercial networks.

Charges and next steps

She faces federal weapons and sanctions-related charges, including allegations of exporting arms without a license. The next step is her court appearance in Los Angeles, where prosecutors will lay out the complaint in more detail.
