She thought he was handing her a tissue
Lauren Bruce, 34, was getting emotional during her Aug. 1 wedding ceremony at St. Luke's Church in Westborough, Massachusetts, when the priest, Father Diego, reached toward her with a piece of cloth.
Lauren assumed he was offering her something to wipe away her tears.
So she used it.
There was just one problem: it wasn't a tissue. It was part of the priest's robe.
The moment she realized what happened
In the viral video, Lauren can be seen dabbing her face before realizing what she'd just done. She immediately starts laughing, while her new husband, Gordon Wallace, tries desperately to keep a straight face during the solemn ceremony.
Lauren told PEOPLE that it took her a moment to understand what had happened. She initially worried that Father Diego might be upset, but the priest and the couple eventually had a good laugh about the mix-up.
There was actually a reason for the confusion
Lauren explained that she had a close relationship with Father Diego and had attended the church for years, including for her baptism and First Communion.
She also said the priest had been performing a blessing with the holy cloth, which helped explain why she thought he was reaching out to hand her something.
The internet couldn't get enough
The wedding video quickly exploded on TikTok, eventually receiving more than 23 million views.
Lauren says she never expected a private wedding moment to reach so many people—but she's choosing to embrace the embarrassment.
Her takeaway? We're all human, and it's okay to laugh at yourself.
Bottom line
What could have been an awkward wedding-day mistake turned into a sweet and hilarious memory for Lauren, her husband and their guests. And now, millions of people have gotten to laugh along with them.
