Bre-Z on That Hilarious Jay-Z Mix-Up, the Meaning Behind Her Name, and ‘All American’s’ Final Season

After eight seasons of All American, Bre-Z is preparing to say goodbye to the character that helped make her a household name.

The actress and rapper, whose real name is Calesha Murray, recently opened up about the show's final season, the meaning behind her unusual stage name and one particularly funny case of mistaken identity involving none other than Jay-Z.

For Bre-Z, the end of All American is bittersweet. The series has been part of her life for nearly a decade, giving her character, Tamia “Coop” Cooper, room to grow from a troubled teenager into a young woman pursuing a career in law.

So, Where Did “Bre-Z” Come From?

The name Bre-Z isn't a Hollywood creation.

Bre-Z has previously explained that her grandmother gave her the nickname when she was born. According to her story, she wouldn't stop crying until the windows were closed because she was cold. Her grandmother reportedly called her “breezy,” and the nickname eventually became Bre-Z.

The actress later discovered that Bre-Z wasn't actually her legal name when she was in elementary school.

She has joked about being shocked when teachers and her mother explained that her birth name was Calesha.

But by then, Bre-Z had already become the name that felt like her.

The Jay-Z Mix-Up Had Everyone Laughing

Then there's the Jay-Z story.

During her recent appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Bre-Z recalled a hilarious moment involving the Grammy-winning rapper that resulted from people confusing the two names.

The story became one of the lighter moments of the interview, giving Bre-Z and Jennifer Hudson plenty to laugh about.

Considering Jay-Z's decades-long status as one of hip-hop's biggest names, being mistaken for him is certainly an unusual situation — especially when you're Bre-Z.

Saying Goodbye to Coop

While the Jay-Z story brought plenty of laughs, Bre-Z also reflected on the emotional reality of ending All American.

The CW drama premiered in 2018 and has followed the lives, relationships and ambitions of young people navigating life between Beverly Hills and South Los Angeles.

Bre-Z's Coop has undergone one of the show's most significant transformations. Her journey eventually took her toward law, allowing the character to move far beyond the circumstances she faced when viewers first met her.

Bre-Z previously said she wanted to see Coop “progress” and help change the way Black masculine-presenting women are represented on television.

An Emotional Final Season

The cast has already acknowledged how difficult it is to close such a long-running chapter.

Bre-Z and Greta Onieogou, who plays Layla Keating, previously described the final-season table read as an emotional experience, with cast members struggling to get through their lines without crying.

Now, with the series approaching its final episode, Bre-Z is looking back at the years of friendships, growth and memories created along the way.

The series finale, titled “To Live and Die in L.A.,” is scheduled to air Sept. 28 on The CW.

What's Next for Bre-Z?

Although All American is ending, Bre-Z's career is far from over.

Alongside acting, she has continued pursuing music and has used both sides of her career to tell stories that reflect her experiences and perspective.

As she closes the door on Coop, Bre-Z is entering a new stage — one where she can take everything she learned from eight seasons and carry it into whatever comes next.

And if her story is any indication, she'll be doing it as Bre-Z — the name her grandmother gave her long before Hollywood knew who she was.
