Bradley Cooper to Lead the Cast of ‘G.I. Joe’ in New Movie
The Oscar-nominated actor has been tapped to star as Duke, the field commander and leader of the G.I. Joe team, in Paramount Pictures' upcoming live-action G.I. Joe movie. The film will offer a fresh reimagining of the iconic Hasbro franchise, with production expected to begin in 2027.
The casting gives Cooper one of the franchise's most recognizable characters. Duke was previously portrayed by Channing Tatum in the 2009 film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and its 2013 sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
Danny McBride Takes the Franchise in a New Direction
The new movie is being directed by Danny McBride, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri.
For McBride, the project represents his feature-film directing debut. He has previously directed episodes of television, including Vice Principals and The Righteous Gemstones.
McBride was brought onto the project earlier this year after pitching his vision for a new G.I. Joe story to Paramount. Hasbro officially announced in July that McBride had been attached to direct the upcoming feature.
A Fresh Take on G.I. Joe
Paramount has confirmed that the new film will be uncoupled from the Transformers franchise.
A potential G.I. Joe/Transformers crossover had previously been teased at the end of 2023's Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, but that project is no longer in development. The new movie instead will establish its own direction for the G.I. Joe characters.
Plot details remain largely under wraps, although McBride has previously discussed a story centered on Duke and other Joes.
Cooper and McBride Reunite
The casting also reunites Cooper and McBride, who previously worked together on HBO's The Righteous Gemstones.
Cooper appeared in an episode of the series, while McBride reportedly had the actor at the top of his wish list once he took over the G.I. Joe project.
The pairing marks a major shift in Cooper's upcoming film slate, adding a large-scale action franchise to a career that has included dramas, comedies and musical performances.
What We Know About the New Movie
The upcoming film will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian and Zev Foreman for Hasbro Entertainment.
Beyond Cooper as Duke, additional casting and the official title have not yet been announced. Paramount also has not announced a theatrical release date.
For now, the project is expected to move toward production in 2027, with Cooper stepping into the role of the military leader at the center of this new chapter for G.I. Joe.
