Billy Ray Cyrus REACTS to Miley Ditching His Last Name Professionally
The Grammy-winning pop star has dropped “Cyrus” from her professional name and is now presenting herself simply as Miley as she prepares to release her 10th studio album, Bass Persuades, on September 18.
The rebrand quickly sparked speculation among fans, particularly because of the Cyrus family's complicated history. But Billy Ray appears to be embracing his daughter's decision rather than taking it personally.
“Just… Miley”
Billy Ray addressed the name change in an Instagram post featuring a throwback photo of himself with Miley and her brother, Braison.
He explained that he has always called his daughter “Miley” and said he felt good about her decision to use her first name professionally.
Billy Ray also compared the move to legendary performers who became recognizable by a single name, mentioning stars including Dolly, Cher, Elvis and Prince. He described the change as a “natural progression” for an “iconic superstar legend.”
The country singer even reflected on his own career, recalling that he once wanted to be known simply as “CYRUS” before his record label pushed for the name Billy Ray Cyrus ahead of the release of his 1992 hit “Achy Breaky Heart.”
A New Era for Miley
The professional name change comes alongside the announcement of Bass Persuades, Miley's upcoming 10-track album.
Miley introduced the project as an exploration of the many sides of music and emotion, describing it as something that captures heartbreak, love, vulnerability and the experiences in between.
The album follows her 2025 release Something Beautiful and is scheduled to arrive September 18 through Atlantic Records.
The track list includes songs such as “Let’s Get Married,” “Orbit,” “Aftermath,” “Redlights” and “Snow,” along with collaborations with Model/Actriz and Andrew Wyatt of Miike Snow.
A Different Chapter for Father and Daughter
Miley's decision to go by her first name comes after years of public speculation about tension within the Cyrus family.
However, Miley has previously spoken about repairing her relationship with her father. In 2025, she said that enough time had passed for the family to reconnect and that she had reached a point where she could view her father as an individual while still maintaining their relationship.
Billy Ray's latest message appears to reinforce that reconciliation, putting the focus on pride in his daughter rather than the name she chooses to use professionally.
Miley Is Moving Forward
The new identity is already appearing across Miley's social media and promotional materials as she prepares to launch the next chapter of her career.
She is also scheduled to perform two shows at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on October 16 and 18, giving fans their first major live opportunity to experience the new era.
For Billy Ray, though, she doesn't need the family name to be recognized.
She's simply Miley — and, in his eyes, that's more than enough.
