Beyoncé is Selling an Empty Box for $1,000—Yes, We Have Questions Too
As part of her surprise anniversary merchandise drop on Sept. 4, Beyoncé unveiled the “Bey Keeper Collector’s Box,” a limited-edition wooden crate priced at $948.01.
And yes, the box is being sold without vinyl records inside.
Only 500 of the collector's boxes are available. The wooden crate is designed to hold Beyoncé's vinyl collection and features a velvet-lined interior, custom details and a faux alligator-skin strap. The unusual price is a nod to Beyoncé's birthday: Sept. 4, 1981.
In other words, fans aren't paying nearly $1,000 for what's inside the box. They're paying for the box itself.
The Bey Keeper Has Fans Talking
The price immediately became a talking point among fans online, with some questioning whether an empty storage crate could really justify a price tag approaching four figures.
Others have speculated that the limited-edition item could become a collector's piece, particularly because only 500 were made.
The box is part of a much larger B’Day anniversary collection that includes more traditional merchandise, such as T-shirts and other apparel. The anniversary release also features previously unseen imagery from the era.
B’Day Gets a Major Anniversary Upgrade
The unusual merchandise isn't the only surprise Beyoncé had planned for the 20th anniversary.
The singer also released B’Day (20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) on Sept. 4 — exactly two decades after the original album arrived on her 25th birthday.
The expanded edition contains 31 tracks, including remastered versions of the original songs, previously unreleased material, Spanish-language recordings and new collaborations.
Among the biggest surprises are “Cuerpo (Tumbao) (Get Me Bodied)” featuring Maluma and “Irreemplazable (Como La Flor)” featuring the late Selena Quintanilla.
The Selena collaboration combines Beyoncé's Spanish version of “Irreplaceable” with Selena's iconic “Como La Flor.” The collaboration was made possible with approval from Selena's estate and represents a connection between two Texas-born artists who have had major cultural and musical influence.
A Celebration 20 Years in the Making
The original B’Day became one of the defining albums of Beyoncé's early solo career, producing hits including “Déjà Vu,” “Irreplaceable,” “Ring the Alarm” and “Get Me Bodied.”
For the anniversary edition, Beyoncé also revisited the album's visual history. Music videos originally shot on 35mm film have been remastered, recolored and finished in 4K, while previously unseen photographs from the New Orleans recording era have also been released.
So while the nearly $1,000 empty box may be the part of the celebration getting the most confused reactions, there's considerably more to Beyoncé's B’Day comeback than one very expensive crate.
Still, at $948.01, fans have one question that may be impossible to avoid:
What exactly are we supposed to put in it?
